About the Producer
Seeta Giri is the founder of The Mountain Crafts, a social enterprise established in 2021 with the goal of empowering local artisans in Bhutan amidst the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Seeta’s journey is rooted in a deep commitment to preserving indigenous knowledge and supporting rural communities. Born in a small village in southeastern Bhutan, she developed a passion for working with local communities during her tenure with the Global Environment Facility/Small Grants Programme (SGP) in Bhutan from 1998 to 2001. This experience ignited her interest in documenting the indigenous wisdom of Bhutan's remote communities, which she later explored in her book The Vital Link: Monpas and their Forests.
Throughout her career, Seeta has focused on environmental and cultural issues, gaining over twenty years of experience in various policy advisory and program management roles within the United Nations and the NGO sector. Her work spans the fields of climate adaptation, disaster preparedness, and post-crisis recovery, with over fifteen years of field experience in countries such as Afghanistan, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Nepal. After returning to Bhutan in 2018, Seeta pursued her dream of connecting with remote villages to deepen her understanding of mountain cultures and ecosystems.
Through The Mountain Crafts, Seeta aims to promote sustainable, environmentally friendly production of handcrafted products while preserving indigenous arts and crafts. By empowering local artisans, she seeks to ensure that traditional knowledge and practices are sustained for future generations.
